What happened?

The Community server browser tab in both the standalone DayZ Launcher and the in-game browser is flooded with fake/spoofed servers.

These malicious servers inflate their player counts using bots/fake ping responses and mimic the names, tags, and titles of popular legitimate community servers. When players attempt to connect, they are often redirected to completely different low-quality or monetization-heavy servers.

Cross-referencing with third-party launcher tools (such as DZSA Launcher) clearly reveals these artificial inflated numbers.

Impact on the Ecosystem:

  • Confuses New Players: Beginners waste time connecting to empty or deceptive servers, resulting in a poor first impression of the game.

  • Hurts Legitimate Communities: Honest server owners lose potential players because their genuine listings are pushed down by hundreds of fake, bot-boosted servers.

  • Forces Third-Party Tools: Players are forced to rely on unofficial third-party launchers (like DZSA) just to find real servers, undermining the official launcher.

Suggested Improvements:

  • Query Verification & Anti-Spoofing: Implement stricter server query verification (e.g., verifying server identity/A2S_INFO responses) to detect and filter out spoofed player numbers.

  • Report & Blacklist System: Add a built-in mechanism for reporting fake/spoofed servers directly within the launcher.

  • Unique Server Verification / Badges: Introduce an opt-in verification or unique ID system for established community hosts to prevent brand impersonation.

Additional Note / Impact on Community:

Due to the lack of filtering against spoofed servers in the official launcher, a large portion of the active player base is forced to rely on third-party launchers (such as DZSA Launcher) as their primary server browser.

Improving server verification in the official launcher would help bring players back to the native ecosystem and eliminate the reliance on external tools.

At this point, I’m starting to think the fake player counts are being included in the official player statistics. Why else would an issue that’s been reported for years keep getting acknowledged as a “known issue” without any meaningful fix? 😂

Can’t have declining player numbers if every server has 127/127 players, right? Maybe the spoofed numbers look great in the analytics, so fixing the problem would actually be bad for the quarterly report.

Jokes aside, it’s pretty embarrassing that the community has to rely on third-party launchers to find legitimate servers while the official browser remains flooded with fake listings. But hey, at least it’s a known issue. 👍
