Summary
Currently vehicles experience no difference in drag/rolling resistance between surface types. A vehicle free rolling on asphalt and one free-rolling on grass behave the same, which removes any real incentive to use roads offroad driving is nearly as fast as on-road in most vehicles, with no meaningful downside.
Proposal
Add surface-dependent drag so that:
This creates a clear pros/cons tradeoff for diverting from roads
Synergy with the tire system
This pairs well with the newer tire system:
A vehicle like the S105 shoud be noticeably worse offroad.
Offroad-oriented vehicles (e.g. the Willys) would have a clear advantage off-road with offroad tires.
Offroad tires would trade that advantage for more friction (and therefore reduced speed) on smooth surfaces like asphalt.
