Experimental Version

1.8.0.5

Mission

Is it modded?

Description

I understand this is the very first iteration released, I understand the issue it is trying to solve, but I cannot help but think anything other than that the cure is worse than the disease in this case. I know many values and configurations will be tweaked and it could be better in a few months time, but I still do not wish for this to be added to the game.

I understand your point, what people probably use is 50m low graphics grass, the "real" grass is infinite draw distance and on high graphics.

This update is meant to stop that "exploit" that everybody uses.

Yes, it needs improvement, the body should not be a static colour, it should blend in more and maybe slightly show colour from their clothes instead of a black line around them.

But a new problem will arise, from the guy laying down perspective, he will use low grass graphics, so you must join servers with minimum forced server-side settings grass on medium-high.

Enemy POV from image above (high grass settings):

Bodies on roads, low grass and high grass:

    Current defect:

Looks ugly, but you are not meant to skyline even if there's grass.

But you show examples where he does not skyline and yes it looks ugly:

Your last image pov shows a grass that is not too tall, check out the enemy pov:

    Yea, needs tweaking.

Checkout 50m vs 300m grass distance,:

Overall, it is an improvement over the previous update, again it just needs tweaking.

    Would this be better?

If you are not meant to see, why render at all? free fps boost ðŸĨīðŸĪŠ

my prediction is that it will be too hard to balance or program, and it will be discarded 👍

Good points. This technique looks weirder than the one used in Arma 3.

I absolutely agree. In its current state, Far Hide looks like a sci-fi optical camouflage, which completely ruins the realism. On hardcore servers, it is impossible to identify friends or foes because uniforms and gear are totally covered by the ground texture. It will lead to massive teamkilling. Also, snipers will just camp main bases while being completely invisible. Please rework this shader or remove it, we need realistic military simulation, not a Predator cloak. To be honest, I couldn't believe that the developers of such a serious game like Arma could even come up with this idea.

try to put grass on medium-high and 300m, can you spot them like this?

because if you can't then this is doing the job and you should be happy

I think you're looking at the problem from the wrong angle. Far Hide isn't supposed to be a 'Predator cloak' or make soldiers literally invisible. It's there to prevent players from gaining an artificial advantage by simply setting grass rendering to minimum.

Look at the left side of the screenshot: the soldier is already difficult to see, but if you reduce the grass rendering, you can remove most of the vegetation that would realistically be providing concealment and spot the player much more easily. The person hiding there hasn't become more visible in reality... you've simply changed what your client renders.

In an actual military environment, if someone is crouching in tall grass, that vegetation doesn't disappear because the observer decided to use a lower graphical setting. So from a milsim perspective, I actually think the idea behind Far Hide makes sense.

If the current implementation covers the uniform and gear too much, then sure, the shader should be tuned. But that's an implementation/balance issue, not a reason to remove the feature altogether. The goal should be to preserve a reasonable amount of concealment regardless of graphics settings, while still allowing players to identify friendlies and enemies at appropriate distances.

Calling it 'sci-fi optical camouflage' seems like an exaggeration. It's not making the soldier invisible, it's preventing a graphics setting from completely removing the vegetation that is supposed to conceal him.
