What happened?

Since one of the latest updates, we've taken a closer look at static memory usage on script modules and its limits.

I'm talking for example about:
Module: Mission; loaded 585x files; 809x classes; used 5753/33554 kB (17%) of static memory; defines: "DAYZ_1_29,PLATFORM_WINDOWS,DIAG,DIAG_DEVELOPER,KR_RUN_ALL_TESTS,CodeLock,sakhal,JM_CommunityFramework,CF_MODULE_CONFIG,CF_EXPRESSION,CF_

We've got approximately 100 MB of total static memory across all modules combined. This is pure sadness, because servers today are heavily modded, and more and more modders are building their own libraries or frameworks — and this trend isn't going away.
Because of this, these limits are going to get hit very fast. I checked my own core library against static memory usage, and it consumes ~4% of that 100 MB limit on its own.
Let's do some quick math, and we see that:
A regular mod with a medium amount of scripts consumes roughly 0.5-1.0% of the total budget. And I'm specifically not even talking about layers like 4_World, which already carries more load than any other layer, meaning the real memory impact of mods placed there is even higher than these numbers suggest.
Do the math, and you get only around 40 mods total that a server can actually run before hitting the wall.
This is not ok. Servers today are already hitting these limits — they have to choose between mods, they can't clean up or optimize away the bloat, their only real option is to REMOVE content, because of limits set decades ago.

Also, a few more points worth raising:

  1. 1_Core doesn't even get its own line in the static memory logs.

  2. GameLib has JUST 2 MB of static memory total, and it's the tightest pool of all four by far.

  3. Log strips defined defines, because Print function is bad (has limits in it for some reason)

Given all of this, you need to address this problem urgently, before it starts causing real problems for more and more of your players.

Už tri roky prevádzkujem vlastný DayZ server. Za ten čas som do tejto hry investoval nespočetné množstvo hodín. Upravujem ju, vylepšujem, propagujem a robím to všetko preto, že DayZ jednoducho milujem.

Kvôli novým obmedzeniam pamäte som však teraz nútený odstraňovať módy, na ktorých sme pracovali celé mesiace. Módy, do ktorých sme vložili obrovské množstvo času, úsilia a energie, len aby sme hráčom priniesli čo najlepší herný zážitok.

A mám pocit, že tentoraz mi ho utiahli priamo okolo krku...

    Dusím sa...

    Som unavený, šéfe...

Why do you restrict people from playing the way they want on your own projects? You yourselves hardly ever add anything interesting to the game, nor do you focus on optimization—so people decided to take matters into their own hands. But no... you’ve chosen to limit the space the engine allocates for modifications. You tie your own users' hands, and then you wonder why players are always criticizing the actions of Bohemia Interactive.

Please Listen to the DayZ Community — 6 Years of Streaming and Supporting This Game

    Dear Bohemia Interactive Team,

My name is Yashka. I am a YouTube content creator who has been streaming DayZ STALKER RP for six years.

Throughout my streaming career, I have broadcast approximately 2,100 livestreams and 10,500 hours of content. I have introduced countless viewers to DayZ and contributed to the growth of the Russian-speaking STALKER RP community.

I want to express my strong support for this issue.

The DayZ modding community is one of the main reasons this game continues to thrive.

Mod developers have spent thousands of hours building incredible experiences, creating unique mechanics, and keeping entire communities alive.

And now, because of the approximately 100 MB static script memory budget and restrictive per-module limits, developers of large modded servers are being forced to remove content they have spent years creating.

This is unacceptable for a game whose longevity depends so heavily on its modding community.

As a streamer, I have personally witnessed how modded servers attract new players, keep existing players engaged, and contribute to the continued popularity of DayZ.

And there is something else I want Bohemia Interactive to understand.

For years, content creators like myself have been promoting your game to thousands of viewers, introducing new audiences to DayZ, and encouraging people to become part of its community.

We have been providing your game with years of free publicity, bringing attention, new audiences, and potential new players to DayZ — without asking for anything in return.

We do this because we genuinely love the game and believe in its potential.

We are not asking for special treatment, financial rewards, or recognition.

We are simply asking you not to restrict the creative freedom of the very people who have helped keep this game alive and growing for so many years.

Modders are not just creating additional content. They are helping sustain the game, its player base, and the entire ecosystem surrounding DayZ.

I respectfully urge Bohemia Interactive to reconsider these limitations, significantly increase the available script memory, and work directly with experienced mod developers to find a sustainable solution.

We understand that engine-level changes take time, but the community deserves a clear response and a concrete plan for addressing this problem.

Please don’t let technical limitations destroy years of hard work, dedication, and creativity.

I have dedicated six years of my life to DayZ, and I want to continue supporting and promoting this game for many more years.

Support the modders. Protect the communities. Give DayZ room to grow.

    Respectfully,

Yashka — DayZ STALKER RP Streamer

Title: Constructive Feedback & Proposed Solutions regarding Static Memory Limits and Mod Loading

    Hello developers and community,

First of all, I want to thank the author for a very detailed and well-researched report. The breakdown of the 100 MB static memory limit and the impact of growing mod sizes is a critical issue that will only get worse over time. I agree that this is a major bottleneck for the server's longevity and stability.

To help move this discussion forward and get it resolved, I would like to summarize the core issues and propose a few constructive solutions:

    The Core Problem:

Currently, the engine heavily relies on static memory allocation. As the author noted, with mods like 4 World and others constantly expanding, the server is hitting the 100 MB ceiling. The fact that even the core libraries (1. Core, 2. GameLib) are struggling to get proper memory slices shows an imbalance in resource distribution. If servers are forced to choose between essential mods just to avoid crashing, the gameplay experience will suffer.

    Proposed Solutions / Next Steps:

    1. Dynamic Memory Allocation: This is the ultimate long-term goal. Is it technically feasible to migrate the mod loading process from static to dynamic memory (e.g., using heap allocation)? This would eliminate the hard 100 MB cap, allowing the server to use the system's available RAM instead.

    2. Memory Usage Diagnostics & Profiling: It would be highly beneficial to add a diagnostic tool (or a console command) that allows server owners to see exactly how much static memory each mod consumes. This would help server admins identify "heavy" mods and make informed decisions.

    3. Core Library Optimization: If expanding the 100 MB limit is impossible in the short term, can the core libraries (1. Core and 2. GameLib) be optimized to consume less static memory? Freeing up even a few megabytes there could give regular mods more room to breathe.

    4. Slicing Adjustment: As the author mentioned, the current memory slices are unbalanced. If the total memory limit is increased, the allocation algorithm needs to be re-evaluated so that core libraries and large content mods get the memory they actually need without starving others.

    Questions for the Developers:

    * Are there any plans in the near future to introduce dynamic memory allocation for mods?

    * Is the 100 MB static memory limit a hard engine limitation, or can it be adjusted via configuration files in future patches?

I really hope the development team takes a look at this. Solving this now will save the community a lot of headaches down the line.

Thank you for your time and hard work!
