What happened?

I would like to suggest a group of gameplay ideas based on one concept: making the world of DayZ more unpredictable and giving players more reasons to explore, experiment and create their own stories.

The main idea is that not everything should be explained to the player. Some discoveries should be rare, random and mysterious, encouraging players to share information, screenshots, videos and theories with the community.

1. Rare random locations

Rare underground bunkers, laboratories or military facilities could randomly spawn somewhere on the map. They would not appear on every server and would not always be in the same location.

The developers would not need to announce them. Players could discover them naturally, find locked entrances, access cards, documents, notes and environmental clues that slowly reveal pieces of DayZ lore.

2. Random abandoned container ships

Abandoned container ships could also appear randomly. Different ships could contain different stories, locked containers, documents, supplies or clues connected to other locations.

The goal would not simply be additional loot, but creating rare discoveries that players would talk about and investigate together.

3. Improvised item combinations

I would like to see more possibilities for combining existing items in unexpected ways.

For example, a weapon and a rope could be used to create an improvised trap at a door. Other combinations could create alarms or other simple survival tools.

The game would not necessarily tell players these combinations exist. Players would discover them through experimentation.

4. Empty cans, embers and physical traces

I would like to see empty cans return as physical objects after eating canned food.

An empty can could have additional survival uses, for example carrying a hot ember from one fire to another.

Food and other consumables could also leave physical rubbish behind. Empty cans, wrappers and bottles could remain in the world.

This would create another way of tracking other survivors. A player could find rubbish and realize that someone had recently been there.

Players could also clean up after themselves to reduce the traces they leave behind.

5. Smell and hygiene

A subtle smell system could add another layer of survival.

A character who has not washed for a long time, has been running extensively, is covered in blood or has been around strong smells could become easier to detect at close range.

Instead of a visible HUD indicator, another character could subtly react by sniffing when close enough.

Rain and washing could reduce the smell.

This could potentially interact with animals as well.

The intention is not to turn DayZ into a hygiene simulator, but to create another subtle way for players to detect and track each other.

Reproduction steps

This is a feature suggestion rather than a reproducible issue. The following describes how these systems could work in-game:

  • Rare locations would spawn randomly and infrequently, with different possible locations and variants.

  • Players would have to discover access cards, clues and information themselves.

  • Abandoned container ships could appear as rare dynamic discoveries.

  • Existing items could have additional uses when combined, allowing players to discover improvised traps and survival solutions.

  • Empty food containers and other rubbish could remain in the world and provide clues about recent player activity.

  • Embers could potentially be carried in suitable containers such as empty cans.

  • A subtle smell system could allow players to detect nearby survivors under certain conditions.

The key idea is that these mechanics should not be fully explained by the game. Players should experiment, discover them and share their findings with the community.

Expected result

The goal of these suggestions is not simply to add more content, but to make DayZ generate more unexpected stories between players.

I would like the world to feel less predictable and more reactive to what players do.

A rare bunker should make players wonder what they have found.
A mysterious container ship should create theories about where it came from.
Rubbish left behind should reveal that someone was there.
Improvised item combinations should reward experimentation.
Carrying embers should give old items new survival uses.
Smell could provide another subtle way of detecting nearby survivors.

Most importantly, I think some of these systems should remain unexplained.

If a rare location appears after an update without being announced, players could discover it themselves, share videos and screenshots, compare findings and try to understand the lore.

The result would be a world where players don't just play DayZ — they create stories, mysteries and discoveries that spread naturally through the community.

I believe this would fit the survival, uncertainty and emergent storytelling that make DayZ unique.

I like this idea, it actually overlaps with two seperate ideas I have for the game.

The first over arching idea of making the game more unpredictable with random locations, I like, I've had this idea before but only for dynamic events, and not necessarily static locations unique to each server. That's interesting, but overlaps another idea I've had about making procedural worlds for DayZ. I hadn't considered your idea of simply making reset-persisting random static locations in vanilla maps. That is interesting, but I don't like the idea that it is meant to encourage players posting images and sharing information outside of the game. I think it should encourage players to play the game and maybe protect information inside the game; this could create an economy of information in DayZ and that would be much more interesting.

Trash being left behind isn't a terrible idea; make it despawn like mushrooms and fruit despawn. It shouldn't be a big deal on performance; trees can spawn loads of mushrooms and fruits if you sit next to them for long enough. More ways to track players is a big win.

Some of these things would be very easy to implement in the current engine, and if you want to track players better, what if you had thermal vision and black lights you could use to look for fingerprints and blood? If that sounds cool, leave a comment for the devs saying you would like to see the DayZ tools ported to be stable for operating systems other than windows, like this comment and show your support.
If the DayZ tools were working on non-windows computers, you would have all of this and more.
