Description

Bellow I have listed my feedback regarding mouse steering, as well as some ideas I have for the Dev team.

I love the addition of Mouse steering for cars, especially for us who play on keyboard and mouse; it makes it much easier to take smoother turns. But, I feel like when you come into contact with an enemy it can screw you over depending on your settings if you need to take a really sharp turn off the road.

If you have your steering speed sensitivity low (which helps with those smooth curves) it becomes much harder to quickly turn or get off the road safely, of course you can always just stop using your mouse and use A & D, but if when you go from mouse to keyboard controls your steering centering delay (which only applies to mouse controls) automatically resets, which throws off the equality between the two, becoming two separate turning speeds you have to think about in a split second (from my experience this has made me spin myself out from attempting to overcorrect). This also is made much worse if you accidentally touch your mouse while steering with A & D, as if your steering centering delay is set to a high ms or turned off, it will apply that until you press A/D again, so if you are trying to only turn 90° and accidentally turn off steering centering your hands will keep the wheel turned and make you miss your mark.

Not being able to comfortably look around while driving without having to think and hold down your freelook key can also be a bit annoying if you have to scan your surroundings for enemies.

So, ideas I have that could improve this system and make it more accessible to the average player goes as follows:

1. Give us a key bind that turns on mouse steering only while holding it (or one press to turn it on/off), this would allow players to steer with their keyboard while looking around, but also quickly press and hold a key (for example right-click) and start steering with their mouse. This also could be a fix for needing to quickly change from a slower turning speed with mouse controls to a faster turning speed with keyboard controls (although I have a separate idea for that). This also removes the need for using the freelook key while driving. (This idea could also apply to helicopter mouse steering)

2. In the Gameplay settings, give us a separate Steering speed sensitivity and Steering Centering Delay slider for keyboard controls only. I think the smoothness we get from mouse driving would also be applicable to A & D steering if players could get more options for how they turn their wheel inside of vehicles. This gives those who are opposed to mouse driving a chance to turn equally to those using mouse controls, which would also keep the driving scene fair.

3. Give us one or more key binds that allows you to increase/decrease your Steering speed sensitivity of mouse/keyboard controls. This would allow players to quickly change their turning speed depending on the situation, allowing quicker and better reactions during split second decisions. This also makes a lot of sense because in real life when driving along a curved road you move the steering wheel slowly to follow the curve, but when making a turn at an intersection you spin the wheel much faster. This could be as simple as only 2 speeds that cycle between each other with one click, or a system that allows you to customize different speeds to different key binds.
